Mechanical isolations and set up for the application of a layer of grout on the floor of the Acid Recovery Cell
continued simultaneously to support the grout application this week. A 2” layer of grout was applied to the floor of the cell to even the surface and provide additional shielding for D&D workers (photo at right). Following the grout application, asbestos-trained workers will perform entries into the cell
to remove asbestos containing material from the from three in-cell tanks.

Elsewhere in the Main Plant, a Spider Basket is being used to access the uppermost regions of the Product Purification Cell – North (PPC-N) as efforts to decontaminate and deactivate the cell proceed. Work during the initial “top-down” entries will focus on Rad surveys and the electrical isolations necessary to remove scaffolding from the cell. An access point is being cut through the wall in the lower portion of the cell to enable removal of debris from the bottom of the PPC-N. Outside the PPC-N in the Upper Warm Aisle, three of six pump niches have been decontaminated and deactivated; work is underway in two more. There are nine pump niches in the Lower Warm Aisle; work in this area has not yet started.
